That was the first question I asked when I ended up there some years ago. I didn’t know Bali yet and I couldn’t see Lovina bearing the same appeal as Jimbaran or Kuta.
“You could go see the dolphins in the morning, they show up everyday”
That was the fisrt answer to my question.
DOLPHINS! I love them, I love them, I love them and I’m ready to bet you do too. For me, sunrise dolphin sighting is still the the best thing to do in Lovina and I did it again last week, to take some pictures and share with you.
Let me tell you how it went:
That was the most difficult part. I’m not a morning person. Fortunately, a good night of rest atAneka Villa and Spa had recharged my batteries. The sea breeze gave me an extra boost, too.
At first I was surprised: instead of the telltale speedboat I was expecting, I was directed to a a wooden motorized canoe. It turned out to be way more stable than I thought, and rather comfortable. Later, when the dolphins did show up, I found it very practical since it leaves your whole body free move and follow the action, while keeping your really stable. And with a camera in hand, I really wanted to be stable!
A sunrise from the shore is beautiful. A sunrise from the sea is magnificent. I took shot after shot and almost forgot it wasn’t the main thing to do.
The skipper called me and pointed at the water. Then I saw them, two groups of dolphins happily jumping out the water.
Shortly after, we lost their sight… only to see them emerge from behind us, seemingly playing hide and seek with us.
Other members of our flotilla went cheering and cameras (including mine) went crazy with sutter sound. It really did feel like a game, and I’m so happy I could bring you back some photos.
After all that fun, we went back to the beach just behind my hotel, where I had a solid breakfast and a well deserved nap.
I think I will go there again soon, I just can’t get enough of them, the sunrise and the sea air; I always leave the place with even more good memories than good photos!
Use sunscreen! I made the mistake once. I learned my lesson. Alternatively, a long sleeved t-shirt and a hat will do the job.
Don’t forget your camera. You’ll be missing fantastic shots if you do.
Stay on the beach for a little while, and look at the skippers tend their ships. Some even carry their very heavy engines on their shoulders!
